How to Choose the Right LED Screen Pixel Pitch in Malaysia
Pixel pitch is the single most important specification when choosing an LED screen — it controls image clarity, viewing distance, resolution and price. This guide covers how to select the right pitch for LED screens in Malaysia, from P1.25 fine-pitch indoor walls to P5 outdoor billboards.
What Is LED Pixel Pitch?
Pixel pitch (written as P1.5, P2, P5 and so on) is the distance in millimetres between the centre of one LED pixel and the centre of the next, measured both horizontally and vertically. A P5 LED screen has pixels spaced 5 mm apart; a P1.5 screen has pixels 1.5 mm apart.
A smaller pixel pitch packs more pixels into the same area, producing a sharper, smoother image that looks correct even when viewed up close. A larger pixel pitch spaces the pixels further apart, which lowers cost and brightness requirements but means the image must be viewed from further away to appear seamless.
How Pixel Pitch Affects Resolution
Resolution is not a fixed number for an LED screen — it is calculated from the pixel pitch and the physical screen size. For a given screen dimension, a smaller pitch produces a higher resolution.
For example, a 1 m × 1 m screen at P5 has a resolution of 200 × 200 = 40,000 pixels. The same 1 m × 1 m screen at P2 has a resolution of 500 × 500 = 250,000 pixels — over six times more.
This is why fine-pitch displays (P1.25–P2) are used for close-viewing indoor applications where viewers expect the same clarity as a monitor, while P5–P10 screens are used for outdoor billboards viewed from tens of metres away.
The Viewing Distance Rule
A practical rule of thumb used across the LED display industry is that the comfortable viewing distance in metres is roughly equal to the pixel pitch in millimetres. A P5 screen looks seamless from about 5 m away; a P2 screen from about 2 m away; a P1.5 screen from about 1.5 m away.
The minimum viewing distance — the point at which the image stops looking pixelated — is often estimated as half to one metre per millimetre of pitch. Closer than this, the human eye begins to resolve individual LED pixels.
For outdoor roadside billboards in Malaysia, the audience is typically 10–50 m away, so P5, P6 or P8 are common. For indoor control rooms, lobbies and conference halls where viewers stand 1–3 m away, P1.5–P2.5 fine-pitch screens are the right choice.

Indoor vs Outdoor Pixel Pitch in Malaysia
Indoor LED screens in Malaysia typically use pixel pitches from P1.25 to P3. Fine-pitch displays (P1.25–P2) are chosen for broadcast studios, control rooms, corporate lobbies and high-end retail where viewers are close and image quality is critical. P2.5–P3 are common for larger indoor venues, stage backdrops and conference screens where the audience sits a few metres back.
Outdoor LED screens in Malaysia face strong tropical sunlight, so brightness (5,000–7,000 nits or higher) matters as much as pitch. Because outdoor viewers are further away, pitches from P4 to P10 are standard. P5 is the most popular choice for roadside billboards and building-mounted displays, balancing resolution, brightness and cost. P6–P10 are used for very large billboards viewed from long distances on highways.
Malaysia's humid, rainy climate also means outdoor screens must use weatherproof IP65-rated cabinets regardless of pixel pitch.
How to Choose the Right Pixel Pitch
